Histoire en musiques - Algérie, mémoires du RaïHistory in Musics - Algeria: Memory of Raï
At the beginning of the 80's, Raï exploded and started to surge over the country. When Cheb Khaled, Cheb Mami, Chaba Fadela, Cheb Sahraoui and Cheb Hamid sung in the suburb of Paris in 1986, this marked the beginning of their conquest of the world. The time had come for emancipation. They decided to call themselves "Cheb"(junior) to distinguish themselves from the ancients with their traditional instruments and their too romantic style. Their music was rough and their words were coarse. Algeria was at the time in a dead-end : the repression of the1988's riots being its most dramatic expression. Algerian society was opening up to the outside world and wishing for the liberalisation of morals. Raï was the first popular means of expression to speak about this contradiction. Though the songs were not meant to be political, they dealt with the frustrations of life and the hopes of the youth, all the more forcefully. No one could resist the compelling urge to dance on its insistent music.
