Haïti
Haiti, the "pearl of the West Indies." Since the early 1970s, Canadian television has produced numerous reportages on this island. The arrival of thousands of Haitians in Quebec fleeing the dictatorship of Papa Doc; the fall of Baby Doc's regime; and the bitter apprenticeship into democracy—these were all occasions to send in news teams to Haiti and produce reportages. This film provides a different focus on a society which has always been studied in a political perspective. Dany Lafferrière, one of Haiti's leading writers, shows us his Haiti. For Laffarrière, who left his homeland a quarter of a century ago, this film is a chance to make a pilgrimage into his past. In the course of our travels and visits to people he knows, we discover the life of the Haitians in a vision that blends daily life and poetry.
