Golem, Golems
What is the Golem? An artificial being in human form which was given life by cabbalistic magic. The creators of the Golem figure in many traditions and legends. In every version, they had to finally destroy their creation because it had become a threat to the world. If the word Golem means nothing to many people, the terms “artificial creatures” and “artificial intelligence” are more evocative. This film retraces the historical myth of the Golem before examining how the inventors of robotics and contemporary computer sciences are heirs to this myth. Our new Golem makers, whose work will affect the next 50 years, raise the question once asked in the legend: Must we destroy the “creature” before it irrevocably surpasses us? New Golems are in the offing. For the moment, this film introduces us to them.
