The Small Arms Crisis 500 Million Weapons in Circulation

Approximately 500,000 people annually throughout the world are injured or killed by hand-held firearms. Some 500 million of these weapons are held by private individuals, militias or terrorists. The weapon-wreaked destruction is enormous. This program focuses on the Republic of Congo, which is benighted by the aftereffects of civil war. It is awash with firearms. These weapons are compact, readily available and lethal. The international community has launched a campaign to collect the firearms. This mammoth undertaking is held back by political bickering. By showing in vivid detail the desperate situation in the Republic of Congo, this documentary makes an important contribution to what is an ongoing debate.
