Geliebtes LebenSoul of a Century
Cinema is one way of accompanying reality, understanding something of it, marking it out with signs. Eighty years of amateur moviemaking have provided us with the chance to discover 20th century Europe in a historicity that is both linear and cyclical. The minor events immortalized by the amateur eye, representations of a world constructed in the precariousness of the moment. A selection of film journals from Germany, Austria, France, the United Kingdom, Scandinavia and Eastern Europe make up this film. Commentaries are provided by the actors and amateur filmmakers themselves, linked chronologically and thematically. The age of the amateur filmmaker ended in the early 80s with the advent of small video cameras which made filmmaking a less restrictive practice.
