Fureurs et silences, un conflit social en Martinique
On May 26, 1999, the "Toyota conflict" broke out in Martinique. It disrupted life on the island for months and marked hearts and minds for years to come. It all began with a strike at CCIE, Toyota's local dealer. Failure to bring employers and union members to the bargaining table quickly touched off a crisis and ignited a cycle of violence. The conflict extended beyond the company premises and sporadically spread to the rest of the island: roadblocks, clashes and demonstrations punctuated the episodes of the Toyota conflict. At the same time, friction between strikers and management reached a point of no return. On both sides, the rationale of excess fed on three ingredients: invective, physical violence and race hatred.
