Francisco Goya ou la lucidité
Born in Saragossa, Francisco Goya lived many years in Madrid and spent his last years in exile in Bordeaux. As court painter, he was a marvelous portraitist who could bring out the psychology of the many political figures he painted. A forerunner of modern painting, he worked in a range that extended from the gay, pleasant and colorful scenes of Spanish life, to grimmer, strange and distressing subjects known as the "black paintings" of his last period. Between the two, a break. In 1873, Goya went deaf. His bitter, sullen gaze was reflected in his work. This is when he found his free and vigorously sketched style, moving away from the harmonious forms which failed to convey his contorted visions. In this film, the interplay of parallel mirrors blurs the borderline between past and present, between his paintings and images of modern-day Spain.
