Shipwreckers

Behind the varnished wood and polished brass, the shipping industry is built on an unbridled economic system that is deftly exploited by the international business world. The industry is guided by one single rule : turning a profit, at any price. The shipping world has managed to sidestep basic safety standards, to the detriment of man and nature alike. Our film exposes the underside of the shipping industry, showing that oil spills, shipwrecks and abandoned crews are due not only to criminal negligence, but are the inevitable result of an economic system that has spun out of control. We also bare the human realities of the shipping world, telling the story of an abandoned crew that has been stranded for the last two and a half years in a Bulgarian port. The hellish existence of these nine men, left to fend entirely for themselves, reminds us that the collapse of this economic sector is taking a heavy toll of human beings.
