Eine KopfjagdHeadhunting
The name Mkwawa is virtually unknown in Germany today. But in Tanzania, Mkwawa remains a national hero. Streets, squares and schools are named after him. 100 years ago, the colonial troops of the German army, the so-called "Schutztruppe," managed to track down and kill the leader of the rebellious Wahehe in the colony of German East Africa. The Germans cut off the Sultan's head and brought it home to Germany as a hunting trophy. Under the Treaty of Versailles, the head was to be restored to Tanzania, but it remained in Germany a half-century. Director Martin Baer accompanied the Sultan's great-grandson, Is-Haka Mkwawa, in his search for the skull. They take us to the historic sites of contemporary Tanzania and to the German archives. What they find in the storage rooms of German museums provides some insight into colonial history, anthropology and "racial theories."
