Philips Kwame Apagya is a young studio photographer in Ghana. He is based in Shama, a small fishing village on the country's Gold Coast, from where the first slaves left. When the fishing has been good, the fishermen come to be photographed against a painted backdrop representing the icons of Western consumer society. Like the protagonists of the Pop Art, Philips has studied the image of consumerism and uses poetry and humor to highlight the tragedy of Africa, where the remaining photo studios are ordinary places catering to the fulfillment of all desires, where the illusion of reality and the reality of illusion merge.
