Die Eiserne Maria
For seven years, the filmmakers made several trips to Russia, fascinated by the extraordinary fate of Liesabeth Otto, aged of 53 years old today, who was one of the so called "wolfchildren". She lost her parents in the battle against Prussia and had been wandering around for the years that followed. After her mother died of starvation, the 7-year Liesabeth ran away from the ruin in which she and her brother and sister lived. Hunger led the little girl to Lithuania, where she slept in the woods or under bridges. To conceal her German nationality, Liesabeth soon called herself Maritje, Maria in Lithuanian. In 1958, she was busted and sentenced to 7 years in prison, because she stole clothes and bread. First she was sent to a prison for children in Kineschma at the Wolga, then later to a prison for women near Archangelsk at the White Sea. Because she was strong and a good worker, she was soon called the "Iron Maria"...
