Didon et Énée
In her palace, Queen Dido confides her torment to Belinda: her heart yearns for Aeneas, the Trojan prince, who is a guest in Carthage. Aeneas makes his entrance. Dido’s love is returned by Aeneas. But in their cave, the baneful Furies conspire to destroy this idyll. In the person of Mercury, they appear to Aeneas, disturbing his hunt during a powerful storm: he must leave Carthage and give up Dido to sail to the shores of Hesperia and found a new Troy. Aeneas’s ships weigh anchor. Her heart broken, Dido finds refuge in death.
