De stand van de zonThe Eye of the Day
In 1998 a deep political and economic crisis forced President Suharto to resign after thirty-two years in power. This was the beginning of the tumultuous period known in Indonesia as the Reformasi. Indonesia has seen ongoing political change, accompanied by protests, poverty and general insecurity. Two hundred million Indonesians suffer under these conditions. Among them, the central figures of this film : the sixty-year- old woman Rumidjah, her sons Bakti et Dwi, and her friend Ibu Sum. Once every four months, Rumidjah and her friend return to the family's home village to help with the harvest-restocking their larders while they're at it. Bakti, the youngest, fills his days with gambling, games and pigeon racing. He also joins the students to demonstrate against the military. All this loose living annoys his brother, Dwi. Ibu Sum lives among the garbage pickers. The recession has made the position of these workers even more precarious. It is a documentary in the cinema vérité tradition: the filmmaker presents everyday life in Indonesia without directorial intervention. From 1997, he began following Rumidjah and her family.
