Cuba Son
"The Retirees of Santiago", is undoubtedly one of Cuba's most authentic music groups, living proof that this typical rhythm of l' "Este" has retained an energy and freshness rooted in the daily realities of Santiago. In 1994, Mario Carcasés Amabile, then 75, found himself doubly retired — as slaughterhouse butcher and as singer with the "Sanes de Orunte" group. Unwilling to submit to this enforced retirement, he persuaded his musician friends to form a band with him. They rehearsed for three months at Mario's home and successfully gave a first concert for Santiago de Cuba's local television station. On their way home, they were congratulated by people everywhere. An even bigger welcome awaited them in their neighborhoods...
