Winter 1999: we recorded the first accounts of refugees about the famine and repression in North Korea. Since then the situation has not changed. During the summer of 2001, the humanitarian catastrophe is still a thing of the present, the estimated number of victims since 1995 fluctuating between one and three million dead. Political cant is still the order of the day. How can we investigate and film in the land of the "Great Lie," where every contact with a foreigner is forbidden? Our western camera succeeded in recording an exceptional 15-day visit to the last of the Stalinist regimes. Footage both illegal or authorized come into their own with the accounts of those who fled and those whom the regime of Kim Jong Il welcomed for a time. The statements of the former regime's dignitaries, the testimonies of former prisoners of the North Korean gulag, recently sneaked out, as well as smugglers and the staff of NGOs give us a picture of the North Korean reality.
