Combat Damyé
A film about a secular combat dance which only exists in Martinique. Closely associated with the history of its people, the Damyé originally was conceived as a means of expression which their white masters could not fathom. Today, drums and singers still accompany the confrontation of combatants in this ritual dance, with its subtle blend of martial arts. Drawing on the accounts of old and new enthusiasts, legends and superstitions, this film reveals a long-buried collective memory. Once threatened with extinction, the Damyé is today undergoing an undeniable rebirth, thanks to a new generation of followers who are seeking their roots.
