Colonia dignidad, secta e beneficenciaColonia Dignidad, Sect or Charity?
March 24, 1998, Chilean police broke into Villa Baviera, a huge estate in Southern Chile at the foot of the Andes, better known as Colonia Dignidad (Dignity Colony). Colonia Dignidad was a settlement of German immigrants and their descendants who claimed to have created a paradise on earth. But behind this marvelous setting were tales of terrible acts. Tales of slavery, rape and the corruption of innocent children. Tales of appropriation of bodies...and souls. Tales of crimes and impunity. For its supporters, Colonia Dignidad was a masterpiece of a model of community work which deserved social backing. For its detractors, it was a Nazi colony. Human rights organizations in 1980 reported the existence of a torture center there, while the German leaders of the Villa enjoyed the protection of the upper echelons of Augusto Pinochet’s government.
