Clandestins, le voyage infernal
Tens of thousands converge annually on Sarajevo, which at the start of this year was one of the main entryways into Europe for would-be exiles. They come from Kabul, Teheran or Istanbul—their destination: the theoretical El Dorado of Europe. From Sarajevo they then follow one of the most heavily-traveled routes to the new border between Bosnia and Croatia, where, despite the UN presence, total disorder reigns. Many are turned back, which provides another reason to swindle these illegal immigrants who are forced to pay their own journey back. So what if 34 Kurds turned away at the border come back as often as it takes to make a breach. After other borders, other rebuffs, they confront the "Schengen barrier" on the confines of the Czech Republic. The fate of these immigrants, undesirable but indispensable to the equilibrium of the European economy, point up the hypocrisy and contradictions of European policy. While considerable means are used to try to make the outer limits of the Schengen zone impassable, each country of the EU exploit large numbers of illegal immigrants. They are said to number some two millions today.
