Chacabuco, Memoria del SilencioChacabuco, Memories of Silence
After the military coup of 1973, the former saltpeter mines of Chacabuco, deep in the Atacama desert of northern Chile, were turned into a concentration camp for thousands of president Salvador Allende's followers. Centered on the theme of collective memory, this documentary deals with a group of former prisoners, who, in the company of their families, returned to Chacabuco where they had been held for long months. Those who lived in harsh captivity here were able to introduce an unusual degree of cultural freedom: plays, poetry contests, chess tournaments. This film pays tribute to the memory of all those individuals who managed to overcome adversity and humanize not only this desert of northern Chile but also, on many occasions, some of their jailers.
