Bikkoboy

Sacrifice of Bulls

Andreï Gagarin was born in the autonomous region of Komi-Permyatsky (Russian Federation). At present he lives in the town of Nizhny Tagil. This is the story of Andreï's return to his homeland. The village of Bolshaya Kocha, where he grew up, was famous for its ancient "Bikkoboy" rite. This rite, involving the sacrifice of a bull, is a curious blend of paganism and Christianity. Peasants fom Andreï's village have revived this tradition which contains many ethnic, folk and practical signs of life among the people of Komi-Permyatsky, in the heart of Russia, in the northern Urals.
