1907. Stranden, director of the women’s prison, is assassinated. The police unit headed by Putilovsky investigates. Meanwhile, a St. Petersburg student, Alexey Pigid, is killed while working on a home-made bomb. He was a bastard child, an orphan who was brought up by a village woman. Putilovsky discovers that Pigid was under orders to his tutor, Studzinsky, who had joined the terrorists. Pigid’s strange resemblance to Stranden leads Putilovsky to some surprising conclusions.
