Balthus intime

Shortly before his death, the painter Balthus — alias Count Balthazar Klossovski de Rola — agreed to receive television camera crew for an exceptional documentary. The artist, who died last February 18 at the age of 93, and whose work had been exhibited during his lifetime in the world's greatest museums, had always been secretive. Here, interviewed by his daughter, Harumi, Balthus talks about himself. He shows us the places that marked his life: Rossinière, his Swiss chalet, where he had lived since 1977, Beatenberg, the mountain village where he spent his vacations in the company of his mother, Baladine, and the poet Rainer Maria Rilke; Chassy, the French château he acquired in the 50s; the Villa Medicis of which he was director from 1961 to 1977; and Monte Calvello, his castle near Rome. A journey of several months during which, for the first time, Balthus speaks of his family, his art and his friends, Antonin Artaud, Alberto Giacometti, Picasso. This film, completed just days before his death, is his final testimony.
