Augustin Lesage, artiste peintre

Charming words: Raw Art. Is’t art by nature raw? André Breton discovered Augustin Lesage (1876-1954), which is understandable given the surrealists’ penchant for astounding encounters; those mixing the far-away and the humdrum, knowledge and ignorance, painful solitude and the hard-won freedom of body and mind. What with the mines, the mining country, the history of northern France, the unusual theme of clairvoyance, his gifts as a medium, and the very mystery of artistic creation, Augustin Lesage was the very example of the artist with a special destiny. It is not enough to look at his paintings to begin to understand; we must examine everything that made up the painter’s environment, the traditions, the beliefs, the new religions, a century which changed centuries. While this entire region is now called into question and the mines a thing of the past, we can draw a portrait that is part of the history of this region.
