Au temps du Ramadan
The Ramadan of the first generation of immigrants was one of silence and discretion, almost to the point of invisibility. For subsequent generations, although Islam has tended to become a reference associated with their parents, Ramadan has now become an opportunity to assert both their cultural background and their origin. The celebration is no longer merely a family affair. The immigrant family is no longer an inward-looking unit, in exile in a place seen as indifferent or hostile. Second and third generation Muslims were born in France. It is their home. They are claiming back their original cultural identity, transmitted by their parents, and adapting it to the French way of life. What are the forms of open expression today of a celebration which was once observed in discretion and silence ? This is what this documentary sets out to observe, by following the different generations of a family originating from the Maghreb during Ramadan.
