Au-delà des silences
After the tragic events of September 11, many around the world, Belgium included, observed three minutes of silence in memory of the victims. The Hebdo took a look at how Belgium's Muslim community (1/25th of the population—some 400,000 people) reacted to these events. Isn't there a confusion made between Muslims and terrorists? The RTBF's news magazine discovered that public opinion among the Arabic-Muslim population is far from being clear-cut. Some condemn these terrorist acts outright, saying that nothing can justify them. Others consider that the Americans had it coming and that they only reaped the fruit of their policy as a superpower which has humiliated many world peoples, Muslims in particular. Of course, these two extremes bookend a good many more balanced opinions.
