Archives de l'âme
On the night of March 27, 1970, 4000 persons stormed the Gesù Theatre in Montreal to see and hear some 60 poets reciting verse, while a camera crew from the National Film Board of Canada set about recording the event on film. From dusk to dawn, audience and authors gave Quebecois poetry a festival which is today remembered as the Woodstock of our literature. A poetic festival, but also a political festival, a harbinger of the October crisis. That night, it was not only the words of authors that was being put on record, but the very soul of a nation. Using excerpts from Jean-Claude Labrecque and Jean-Pierre Masse's film, La Nuit de la poésie 1970, as well as previously unseen footage, including a reading by Gaston Miron, this documentary highlights everything Quebecois poetry boasted in the way of outstanding voices. It takes us through a sleepless night during which a small nation, previously thought to have no literature, suddenly discovered it had one.
