Antoine Chuquet
Antoine Chuquet was born in 1908 in the French city of Saumur where the novels of Jules Verne were his introduction to literature. His older brother was killed in 1918 and Chuquet would feel guilty about surviving him. He attended high school in Paris. He was a serious student but he took special delight to roam the streets. He met then Pierre de Vinteuil who would become his closest friend. Then Chuquet made his debut in journalism. He wrote for several papers and traveled around crisis-ridden Europe. He brought back long sensational articles. A few years later, after the end of an affair, he wrote about his sorrow and his desire to kill himself. He then enjoyed major success and became a prominent literary figure. He was torn between writing and photography, writing prevailed, photography would nevertheless remain his other passion. Antoine Chuquet covered the world and his times. He wrote some 50 works in all. He died in 1986 at the age of 78.
