Von Fremden Haaren
20 francs a kilogram in Asia, 20 francs the milligram in Paris... Heroin, ecstasy, caviar, gold ? None of that : hair, pure and simple. This reportage conducts us along a new international trade route, in hair. It starts in an unlikely village in southern India, in the company of Venkatta Ramappa. On his bicycle, he rounds up children who gladly give him their curls for an handful of candy. He resells the hair 20 francs for a kilogram to a wholesaler. But the wholesaler has many other suppliers. Most notably, once a year, the pilgrims of Tirutani : a million of them worship the god Murga, and a third of them make an offering of their hair. This is where the wholesalers reckon in tons. The harvest is sent to China where the hair is sorted, cleaned, and colored before being shipped off to the European markets.
