The Turandot Project
In 1997, acclaimed maestro Zubin Mehta was invited to conduct Puccini's "Turandot" at the Teatro Comunale in Florence. In his quest for authenticity, he turned to the Chinese film director Zhang Yimou to give the production an added level of historical accuracy and tradition Mehta was searching for. Little did they know what their collaboration lay ahead. The opera's producer explored the ambitious possibility of staging the Mehta/Zhang production in Beijing's beautiful Forbidden City, former home of the Chinese emperors. Director Allan Miller catches all the behind-the-scenes tension and triumph of this daring production. Zhang is more than forthcoming in describing the differences between shooting a film and directing an opera. The Turandot Project captures the inevitable differences of opinion that inflect projects of this magnitude. Providing the backdrop is not only the extraordinary riches of one of China's great historic sites but also the exquisite and seductive beauty of Puccini's ravishing score sung by some of the world's greatest singers.
