Témoins sourds, témoins silencieux

There are 4 million deaf people in France, 15 million in Europe, 130 around the world. Apart from their handicap, they share a genuine culture in sign language and a common history. But what history is hidden behind this language which is not written and has remained banned in many countries since 1880 ? Thanks to first-hand accounts, this documentary breaks the silence and lifts the veil from the persecutions suffered by an entire community under nazism, as part of the racial hygienics laws promulgated by Hitler in July 1933. Sterilization, forced abortions and organized extermination : due to the absence of interlocutors and despite tangible proof, the deaf have long preserved the painful secret of their destruction. Who, with more difficulty than they, gagged as they are by nature, could testify ? Following the first conference on the history of deaf Jews under Nazism in Bagnolet in 1993, the filmmakers decided to open an inquiry and make a historical documentary on the Nazi's racial hygienics policy. It was seven years in the making...
