Roman Polanski
Mark Cousins' interview with Roman Polanski, filmed in 1999, is one of the most revealing portraits of this elusive director. Polanski offers here an intriguing insight into his directorial approach. He also talks of his fascinating and often tragic personal life, his childhood in occupied Poland and his mother's death in Auschwitz. Moving to America in the 60s, Polanski became part of the Hollywood in-crowd but again faced tragedy when his pregnant wife, Sharon Tate, was massacred at the hands of the Manson family. He himself fled the country in 1978 accused of having sexual relations with an underage girl. Now living in France, Polanski looks back at these pivotal events and assesses to what extent they have affected both his life and his film-making.
