Robert Doisneau, tout simplementRobert Doisneau, Simply Doisneau
As soon as you enter the black-and-white world of Robert Doisneau, it takes on colors and thousands of stories come to mind. Stories of our own invention, stories we remember, which we once heard, stories we lived through too. The poor are happier and the rich are less arrogant, the lovers are more bashful and the ugliness is less repulsive. And yet France wasn't painted in rose colors in the 50s of the post-war, the housing crisis and the traumas of decolonization. Today, dozens of rare photos continue to pour out of his Montrouge atelier. The same photos perhaps but not quite. Doisneau's impartial, alert gaze reassures and his photos are among the icons pinned to the bedroom walls of our teenage years alongside the yellowing "Che" poster. The film is essentially made up of Doisneau's photos : more than 900 shots assembled in highly cinematic sequences to create a portrait of Paris and France that belongs to the past. Music, sound and ambiance noises support these images which are commented by the warm and timely voice of Doisneau himself.
