Proust vivant
Proust was just 51 when he died on November 18, 1922. Reading about everything his friends and family had seen in him, I tried to imagine the personality he must have played for the sake of his contemporaries. (…) This portrait is what is called in literature and music a "tombeau" (a tomb), the eulogy of a great artist whose life, too, could have been a book. The busts and statues at Père-Lachaise cemetery, a handful of old photos, the facades of Paris by night, a few vestiges of the bedrooms in which Proust lived - these are talismans that may allow us to invoke his ghost, see his face, speculate on what he was like during his lifetime.
