"Ransom of the Father" is the title of an exhibition by Israeli artist Zvi Lachman, dedicated to the memory of his father, who died during the spring of 1999; it was held at the Museum of Israeli Art in Ramat-Gan. The director uses this exhibition which centers on the relations between the artist, his father, and artistic tradition in general, as the starting point to follow the creative process of an artist who projects the image of a man who has experienced emotional, geological and cultural upheaval. By placing the myth of sacrifice at the center of its preoccupations, the film raises more general questions about identity from a personal and artistic and cultural point of view. The director spent two years filming Lachman at work : at the foundry, in his studio, at his exhibitions - the camera tears an opening into the being behind the finished artwork.
