Philippe Soupault (1897 - 1990)

Soupault ? Freedom, cheek, insouciance and generosity. And, of course, a magnificent life embracing the whole of the 20th century, under the sign of resistance - resistance to ossified surrealism, to political cant, to nazism, and to all forms of literary and intellectual convention. Soupault would never lose his spirit of liberty. Whether in the face of his parents, his friends (Breton and Aragon, those awesome "governors"), the supporters of Pétain who managed to have him imprisoned (and tortured for several months) and the compact Parisian literary milieu of the 50s and 60s, Soupault always preserved the sardonic smile of a free man ("I never could take myself seriously") and contemplated the world with a wonderfully derisive lucidity. A rebel's lucidity. "I have chosen : poet, vagabond. Traveler. Protester." It is this self-portrait in seven words that the director sought to capture on film. A film that uses a great variety of effects to evoke Soupault's sense of invention and humor. But Soupault's life, enthusiasms and passions - and his works, of course - also have pride of place.
