Paul Morand
Few writers have had so complete a symbiosis with their times as Paul Morand. This documentary treatment of the writer effects continual cross-references between the major events of the 20th century and the writer's work on which they they had an influence. The film is structured around two interviews Morand gave for the Archives du XXème siècle. The events, as he relates them, are at times borne out, at times illustrated by archival footage and the reminiscences of personalities of the time. From time to time, a voice-over commentary provides an additional facts on the literary career, the political itinerary and, of course, the personal life of Paul Morand. There are also interviews with Morand fans - Michel Déon, Marcel Schneider, Philippe Sollers, François Nourrissier, Jean-Claude Guillebaud - who situate his importance in his lifetime and provide comments and anecdotes about his personal life and political tribulations. They also point up how their own cultural choices were influenced by the writings of Morand, whose life was a work in itself, to such an extent that it left a mark on his era.
