Even Israel has its conscientious objectors ! In this country where the army is part of its founding legends, and where soldiers and military leaders are compared to biblical heroes, some citizens refuse to take part in conflicts they consider unwarranted. There are 400 of them - they endured imprisonment and contempt for having held that, outside any individual motives, moral conscience stands outside human laws. By their sides are women who lost sons and brothers in battle and who voice their refusal to continue bringing into the world "sacrificial soldiers". Such radical positions have provoked a violent public debate in Israel, influencing opinion in the cause of peace which, in a way, led to the withdrawal of the Israeli army from southern Lebanon last June.
