On August 19, 1942, seven regiments making up the elite of the Canadian army were decimated by the enemy in less than nine hours on the beaches of Dieppe, in Normandy. This was to be the most important Allied military operation against the Germans, since the beginning of World War II. It turned out to be Canada's worst defeat in the war.
