Madame Bovary

Spirited, passionate and self-destructive, she is one of the most enigmatic of 19th-century heroines. Emma's pursuit of her idealized "grand passion" leads her to ignore her husband and their young daughter, throws her into disastrous love affairs and onto an increasingly self-destructive course. The excessive extravagances that feed her lifestyle leads to bankruptcy and ruin for the Bovarys - a fate Emma finds impossible to face. Romantic, tragic and, at times, comic, Flaubert's story of the quest for fulfilment in love is an enduring classic. This drama in two parts was filmed in the heart of Emma Bovary's country in Normandy, France.
