Of the more than two million men called up for military service in Algeria between 1954 and 1962, the French army officially recorded 500 deserters. Why did they choose to desert ? To understand the reasons behind a decision that affects an entire lifetime, the filmmakers interviewed five former conscripts who refused to obey. Some of them were sentenced to death, but all were finally amnestied.
