Le Village des vierges

Virgin Gold

South Africa has become one of the most violent countries on earth. Poverty, record crime rates, the alarmingly rapid spread of AIDS... One dreadful statistic in itself reveals the tragedy the country is enduring : in South Africa, a rape is committed every 26 seconds. South African women are resorting to any means to protect themselves from the violence and the stupidity of men, a stupidity that expresses itself in the fact that for many men, raping a virgin is the only way to rid themselves of HIV... Thousands of women have found refuge in a strange community a few miles outside Durban. A guru named Shembe holds sway here. The cult blends Christianity and Zulu tradition. Its followers wear long white robes and here in their entrenched camp can protect what is most precious to them : their virginity. These young women thus live sheltered from AIDS and violence. They preserve their "gold", which can bring their parents a staggering figure in compensation from their future husbands.
