Le Capitaine Fracasse
Le Capitaine Fracasse was first released on February 12, 1929. It was long believed lost... For Fipa 2001, the restored 35 mm print of the film is presented as an opening presentation accompanied by Michel Portal and the Compagnie Lubat. In a run-down chateau in Gascony lives a young man, descendant of the Sigognacs. As fate would have it, a troupe of actors arrives one evening and requests his hospitality. The ruined baron warms to the contented players. Charmed by the ingenue Isabelle, Sigognac decides to accompany the troupe as they travel the high roads. When the bandit Agostin attacks them, Sigognac proves his valor with the sword. The Matamore having died of fright, the baron takes his place and plays the Captain Fracasse. The wagon reaches Paris where a nobleman, the Duke de Vallombreuse, notices Isabelle and tries to make her his by the basest means. Not only does Sigognac save Isabelle, but he wins the king’s sympathies. With Vallombreuse imprisoned, Sigognac is appointed governor of his province alongside Isabelle as his baroness in the now restored chateau.
