When I found letters from Poland addressed to my father dating from 1939, I realized that some members of my family, who had disappeared in 1942, had become phantoms. By phantoms, I mean those who had died without being buried and whose moans continue to echo to this day. These phantoms, I also realized, had a material reality for my father.
