La Mémoire retrouvée

55 years after the end of the Second World War, the French Republic thought it had returned what the State and institutions had stolen from the Jews. For two years, a government study group, the Mattéoli mission, analyzed the workings of this despoilment point by point. Appointed in 1997 by Alain Juppé, confirmed by Lionel Jospin, 200 persons - bureaucrats and historians - were temporarily assigned by their administrations or hired to unearth History. National archives, banking and insurance archives, archives of prefectures, ministries and state properties... The research site opened by the Mattéoli mission was vast. Its work was completed in April 2000. The stakes were political, diplomatic, but most of all, moral.
