La Justice des hommesOf Men and Justice
In the spring of 1994, in less than three months, 800,000 men, women and children were murdered in Rwanda, victims of one of the most appalling genocides of the 20th century. Today, 130,000 suspects are still rotting away in prison awaiting trial. In the early trials, because no lawyers would accept to defend them, defendants stood alone before their judges. But for the past three months, the association Avocats sans Frontières (Lawyers Without Frontiers) has been sending in European and African lawyers so that all may have a fair trial. The film deals with these men and women on mission to Rwanda to plead for those who committed the most odious of crimes : genocide. This film raises questions about the notions of justice and humanity. It follows these lawyers as they plunge into one of the most tragic episodes of our history and echoes the inner debates that motivate them : for what can be more dreadful than to plead for criminals responsible for the deaths of 50, 100 or 200 persons ? But for a lawyer, is there an act that better fulfills the notion of justice than to defend the indefensible ?
