La Brigade du bout du monde

Between two oceans, two continents, East and West. Latitude 66 North, longitude 169 West. The end of the world. The outermost point East. At the edge of the polar circle, the Bering Strait marks the frontier between Asia and America. On the Russian side, this region of Siberia is called Chukotka. The village of Ouelen is located at the northernmost point of the Strait. It is 3 a.m. and lights are going on in the houses of Ouelen as the news spreads : the weather is good. For the men of the village, there's no time to lose. Despite the early hour, a coast-guard vessel is there to note the names of the crews : Alaska is not far off and the authorities are on the look-out. At this time of the year, the Chukchis don't go fishing. They hunt walrus and if luck is with them, whale.
