L'Oro del mar Caspio
L'Oro del mar Caspio takes us from Dagestan to Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan by way of Chechnya, following the oil pipelines that cross the capital Grozny - the very pipelines that contributed to igniting the war with Russia. This reportage reveals the increasingly precarious ecological balance in the Caspian Sea basin. For the first time, a foreign television crew was allowed to visit the city of Aktau, an atomic experimentation site set up by the former Soviet Union : an open-air uranium mine which, according to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, represents a serious threat to planetary security. The voyage concludes in Azerbaijan where the contrast between rich and poor is especially acute. In Baku, once the oil capital of the world, several million refugees from Nagorno-Karabakh live today in total destitution.
