The Stroganoff family was one of the most independent ones in the powerful Russian Empire. Its origins go as far as five centuries back. Peasants at first, later aristocrats, they determined the tastes of Russian society and evolved their distinctive style in everything : architecture, icon-painting, applied art, everyday life and even in cooking. There was a common saying : "It is impossible to get richer than the Stroganoffs." But what has remained ? The towns and churches; paintings in museums; the well-known beef Stroganoff recipe; the Stroganoff breed of horses... The only surviving representative of the historical family, Baroness Helen de Ludinhausen, lives in Paris and works for the celebrated Yves Saint-Laurent Company. She has visited Russia for the first time only ten years ago.
