L'Agonie congolaiseCongo, Agony of a Nation
Last November 18, the UN's legal representative for "Shorté" children and the international community began to take interest in the "forgotten war" of Congo-Brazzaville. He drew attention to the fate of 800,000 displaced persons (out of a population of three million) "forced to live in appalling conditions." He reported "the high number of atrocities" perpetrated against the civilian population. A month later, the film crew was there. They certified the scope of the conflict and gathered numerous first-hand accounts which confirmed the reports of the rape of thousands of women, the summary executions, the racketeering and the plunder. The main reason behind the conflict : oil. This reportage singles out the position of Elf - ambiguous to say the least - and the benevolence of the French government.
