IVG : 25 ans après
January 1975. After years of being clandestine, induced abortion is now legal. It took years of struggle, thousands of women demonstrating in the streets and a stormy debate in the National Assembly before the Veil Act could see the light of day. 25 years later, abortion is still taboo. Contrary to their militant elders, young women today go into hiding when they decide to terminate a pregnancy, which is a sign of authentic misgivings with regard to this nonetheless legal medical act. If the anti-abortion commandos are more discreet nowadays, new pressure groups are appearing, with lobbies in the Parliament. In 2000, the Veil Act is still not accepted as self-evident, nor is it adequately applied. Induced abortion remains a right, but a fragile one.
